Seasonal Guide
Every season on the Schilcherstraße has its own character. There is no wrong time — but different seasons suit different purposes.
Spring (April – May)
The mood: Fresh, green, awakening. The vineyards come alive, wildflowers fill the meadows, the forest canopy unfolds. The light is soft and the air smells of growth.
Temperature: 10–22°C. Cool mornings, warm afternoons.
- Buschenschänke begin opening for the season
- Wildflowers in the meadows — the property is especially beautiful
- Excellent hiking weather — trails are quiet, the forest is fresh
- Easter markets in Graz and surrounding towns
Best for: Writing retreats, hiking, photography, couples.
Summer (June – August)
The mood: Warm, generous, expansive. Long days, outdoor living, the glass doors wide open. Light until 21:00 or later.
Temperature: 22–32°C. Warm days, pleasant evenings.
- Full Buschenschank season — all taverns open, extended hours
- Outdoor dining at its best
- The forest provides cool shade on hot days
- Fruit ripening on the property trees
- Long evening light for photography and outdoor work
Best for: Families, team offsites, longer stays. Maximum outdoor living.
Autumn (September – November)
The mood: Golden, abundant, celebratory. This is the pinnacle of the Schilcherland year. Harvest, new wine, roasted chestnuts, and the hills glowing in amber and gold.
Temperature: 8–22°C (September warm, November cool).
- Sturm season (late September – October): Young, cloudy, still-fermenting wine. Sweet, fizzy, deceptively potent. Not to be missed.
- Grape harvest: Some wineries welcome visitors during harvest.
- Kastanien (chestnuts): Roasted chestnuts at markets and stalls.
- Autumn foliage: The forest and vineyards turn spectacular colours.
- Törggelen: Walking from tavern to tavern, tasting new wine and eating hearty autumn food.
Best for: Wine lovers, photographers, writers. The most atmospheric season.
Winter (December – March)
The mood: Quiet, contemplative, inward. The vineyards are dormant, the forest is bare or lightly snow-dusted, and the landscape takes on an austere beauty.
Temperature: -5 to 8°C. Cold, occasionally snowy, but less severe than the high Alps.
- Christmas markets in Graz (Advent). Among the most charming in Austria.
- Thermal spa season — a perfect winter activity
- Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the Koralpe (higher elevations)
- Very quiet on the wine road — few visitors, deep peace
Best for: Writers seeking maximum solitude. Winter rates are the most affordable.
